May 2026 was a month that truly showcased the spirit, strength, and heart of the Witzenberg Valley. From standing together through severe weather devastation to finding hope in community gatherings and regional showcases, the town of Wolseley demonstrated that unity and resilience define our community.
Here is a recap of the key stories, community efforts, and events from May 2026 across Wolseley and the surrounding region:

⛈️Severe Storm Devastation & Mountain Pass Closures 🛣️

Between 9 and 13 May 2026, the Cape Winelands District was hit by one of the most severe storms in recent memory. Back-to-back cold fronts brought gale-force winds and relentless rain, triggering rockfalls, mudslides, and widespread flooding across Wolseley, Tulbagh, and Ceres. Many local farms, homes, and infrastructure suffered extensive damage. In some places electricity was out for days. Impact on Transport Routes: Key access routes experienced significant closures. Mitchell's Pass (R46) between Ceres and Wolseley was closed due to landslides and rockfalls, while Gydo Pass and Bain's Kloof Pass were also affected, with repairs projected to take weeks into months.
Community Emergency Response: In response to the crisis, neighbors, local organizations, and emergency services immediately united to assist displaced families and provide emergency shelter.

Heroes of the Storm: Community Aid in Action ⛑️

The recovery effort saw selfless dedication from local volunteers and organizations who stepped forward to support those affected:The devastating storm that struck the Cape Winelands earlier this May left the Witzenberg region reeling. Families were displaced, homes damaged, and vulnerable members of our community faced urgent need.

In this time of crisis, Chris Loubser, his dedicated team, and EAMS Pty Ltd stepped forward with courage and compassion. They worked tirelessly to clear debris, deliver aid, and ensure that those most affected received the help they needed. Their actions brought relief and hope to many who were struggling in the wake of the disaster.

Alongside them, the Tulbagh Lions Club mobilised quickly to provide essential support. From
coordinating donations of food, clothing, and blankets to offering shelter and care, the Lions played a vital role in helping families through the immediate aftermath. Their commitment to serving the most vulnerable has been widely praised across the valley.

Together, these local heroes remind us that the strength of Witzenberg lies in its people. Their selfless service and unity in action embody the resilience and compassion that will carry our valley through recovery.
