🪧From Roadblocks to Random Acts of Kindness | How "Pie It Forward" Was Born 🥧

Life has a funny way of turning setbacks into stepping stones. At the heart of this resilient spirit is Peppi Stanford, whose guiding philosophy is beautifully simple: do what you can, with what you have, where you are. Operating from The Creative Hub, a charming padstal (farm stall) nestled between Wolseley and Ceres; she actively looks out for her community. Whether she is throwing a lifeline to someone facing hardship, safeguarding local jobs, or simply spotting a neighbor in need of a warm meal, Peppi's daily life is a testament to active compassion.

When destructive floods struck the Western Cape, damaging the R43 and virtually cutting off her padstal, Peppi and her husband Paul faced a major crisis. With customers struggling to reach them, both their business and local jobs were suddenly hanging in the balance.

True to her core philosophy, Peppi didn't sit back and wait. Their initial creative fix, a "Pie-Cycle" designed to pedal past roadworks and deliver orders to regular patrons, was quickly grounded by local authorities. But instead of stopping the momentum, the universe stepped in with a much bigger plan.

A friend living abroad caught wind of the "Pie-Cycle" story and asked to sponsor two homemade pies to be given to two "special people" in the local community. Initially skeptical about how this would work, Peppi found her answer the very next day. While out, she spotted two young men walking a long distance to collect and recycle cans for a modest income. Impressed by their hard work and determination, she gathered her own empty cans to hand over to them.

When her husband chimed in with "Two pies," everything clicked.

Those two young men became the very first recipients of Pie It Forward; a heartwarming initiative where customers buy two homemade pies for R125, keeping one for themselves while donating the other to someone who could use a bright spot in their day.

What started as a spontaneous gesture has since blossomed into a full-scale community movement. From hosting local children from a nearby crèche for free play and fresh pastries to distributing treats to workers along the road, the project has breathed new life into the padstal and the surrounding area.

It’s a powerful reminder that even when roads wash away and challenges mount, a little bit of local ingenuity and a generous heart can pave an entirely new path forward.
